Book private flu to help protect you and your loved ones this winter
A flu vaccine is a yearly injection or nasal spray that helps protect against the most common strains of the influenza virus. It works by causing the body to produce antibodies to fight the flu virus, and while it doesn't guarantee you won't get the flu, it makes the illness less severe and reduces the risk of serious complications. The vaccine is updated each year because flu viruses change, and it is recommended for certain at-risk groups, including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions. How it works Antibody production: The vaccine contains small parts of flu viruses, which trigger your body to create antibodies. Protection: After about two weeks, these antibodies help protect you from getting sick if you are exposed to the actual flu virus. Updated annually: The vaccine is updated each year to protect against the influenza strains predicted to be most common during the upcoming flu season. Who should get it Children: Those aged 2 to 3 years, school-aged children (Reception to Year 11), and children with certain health conditions. Adults: Anyone aged 65 and over, adults aged 18 to 64 with certain long-term health conditions, and pregnant women. Other groups: Those who live with or care for people at higher risk of flu complications, and frontline health and social care workers. Important to know Takes time to work: It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become fully effective. Won't give you the flu: The vaccine cannot cause the flu; it is made from small parts of the virus. Protection fades: You should get a new vaccine each year because the viruses change and protection from the vaccine can decrease over time.
